This is a beautiful Smith and Wesson Victory revolver from World War II. With exception of the grip panels, all matching with the proper “US Property GHD” marking on the top strap. These were typically used as standard issued side arms for US Navy and Marine air crews due to their size and ease of operation. Manufactured between 1941 and 1944, Victory model production ended 8/27/45 at serial number VS811,119. The revolver has retained most of its original finish with just a hint of muzzle wear, some very light scuffs here and there, some minor tool marks on the right side near the front screw, and light roll mark on the cylinder. Beautiful case-hardening on the trigger and hammer. Fitted with a set of wood grips in excellent condition.
Markings: The top of the barrel is marked with “SMITH & WESSON SPRINGFIELD MASS, U.S.A / PATENTED FEB. 6, 06. SEPT. 14,09. DEC. 29,14”, the left side of the barrel with “SMITH & WESSON”, the right side of the barrel with “38 S. & W. SPECIAL CTG” and the bottom of the barrel with “V 408879”. The top strap is marked with “U.S. PROPERTY G.H.D” preceded by an ordnance mark (bomb stamp). The bottom of the grip frame is marked with “V 408879”. The right side plate is marked with the Smith & Wesson trademark logo and the front right of the frame is marked with “MADE IN U.S.A.”. The frame yoke cut is marked with “56548” and the yoke is marked with “56548” and a bold “S”. The rear of the cylinder is marked with “V 408879 S”. The underside of the right grip panel is marked “V191821”
Stock/Grip Configuration & Condition: The grips are two-piece walnut panels with minimal marks or scratches.
Sights / Optics: The front sight is a fixed blade integral to the barrel. The rear sight a slot integral to the frame.
Barrel Length: 4”
Bore Condition: The bore appears bright with sharp rifling. There was no erosion observed in the bore.
Type of Finish: The pistol has the “Black Magic” / parkerized finish. This is consistent with Revolvers made after 04/10/42. The trigger and hammer are color case hardened.
