This is an Italian-made REPLICA of Charleville Model 1777 69 Caliber Single Shot Black Powder Flintlock Pistol with an 7″ Smooth Bore Barrel. Smooth Wood Stock with Brass Frame and a Metal Ram Rod and Belt Clip on the Left Side. Nice Strong Action. The Bore is Good. The Serial number is 2419.
The French Model 1777 pistol was introduced to replace the earlier Model 1763/1766 and was manufactured between 1779 and 1792. During the American Revolution thousands of French M1777 flintlock cavalry pistols were supplied to the American military by the French. The M1777 proved so popular in America that it was copied in 1799 by North & Cheney, becoming the very first official US military pistol. The French models were produced primarily at the Charleville, Maubeuge, and St. Etienne arsenals, and so marked on the brass frame.
Markings: The right side of the frame is stamped “Charleville”. The bottom of the frame is stamped “2419”. The tope of the barrel is marked “NAVY ARMS CO. INC. RIDGEFIELD N.J.”. The bottom of the barrel is marked “BLACK POWDER ONLY-MADE IN ITALY”
Mechanics: The action functions correctly. We did not fire this pistol.
